Brief Profile
Sun Microsystems has a significant presence in India since 1987 through a distributor arrangement, but established a direct presence for the first time in 1995 as a liaison office. This office was finally converted into a wholly owned subsidiary on July 01, 1998. Already rated No.1 in India in UNIX systems revenue and unit market share (IDC), Sun has been growing at twice the industry average for the last few years. Sun's domination of the ISP market is clearly reflected in the fact that it is the preferred platform for most of the leading Corporates, Banks, Institutions, etc. Since becoming a wholly owned subsidiary in India, Sun has invested substantially in setting up a Logistics Center in India to ensure the best possible service to its customers. The company has also invested extensively in setting up the first Competency Centre for Java in Hyderabad. The Indian Engineering Centre, the first in Asia was set up in Bangalore in 1998. The Centre, which is a part of the Corporate Engineering Organisation, primarily provides core competency in support of Sun's engineering operations such as Solaris Operating System, network security, etc. At present, the center supports 500+ engineers. As a part of its new worldwide iForce initiative, Sun is making significant investments in transferring technology, developing skills and services to help Indian organizations deploy the Internet for business advantage.
